I want Quantified Self to be a messy space, one where users willingly choose the aspects of their lives they are proudest of, and most troubled by, and allow them to track, and engage with their narratives over time on their own terms.
I wonder if we can ever reach a point where sensor technology and data-mining can be accessible and successful, flexible enough to be genuinely empowering, allowing users to control their own narratives. Is it improbable to dream of a feminist data future?
“Occasionally I’ll be sitting somewhere and I’ll be listening to someone perhaps not saying the kindest things about me. And I’ll look down at my hand and I’ll sort of pinch my skin to make sure it still has the requisite thickness I know Eleanor Roosevelt expects me to have.”—Hillary Clinton (x)
“The dissemination of information on the web does not liberate information from top-down taxonomies. It reifies those taxonomies. Computers do not invent new categories; they make use of the ones we give them, warts and all. And the increasing amount of information they process can easily fool us into thinking that the underlying categories they use are not just a model of reality, but reality itself.”—n 1: The Stupidity of Computers (via new-aesthetic)
If something is turning so shitty you have to start over, then start over.
Take five minutes to bitch, then just start the fuck over. Nobody has to see your jacked up mistakes but you; just start over. Don’t keep trying to polish a piece of crap, don’t be stubborn, see that it’s a piece of crap…
Whatever high I had coming off of spending time at Boston Comic Con surrounded by comics fans of both genders and many races has evaporated into the air of white dudes bloviating about comics being anything but just for them.
It’s refreshing to read someone finally calling out the idiotic rape culture perpetuated as the ultimate horrific storyline - it’s true, it is horrific and it should never be used in storytelling as a way to depict how evil a villian is. How shallow and immature can these guys be?
